WTA - WTA Eastbourne International
Prediction :
Peyton Stearns to win
17-year-old Mingge Xu has been given a wild card into this Eastbourne grass court event. The Welsh player takes on sixth seed Peyton Stearns for a place in the second round. Here's our match prediction.
The winner of this match will face a qualifier in round two. This is the last tournament before Wimbledon which starts next week. Xu has also been given a wild card for that Grand Slam, so no qualifiers to negotiate this week.
Xu is up to a career high 318th in the live rankings and this is her fourth grass court tournament of the year. Her best performance to date has been making it to the last eight in Birmingham. That included a win over Alycia Parks who's currently 58th in the live list.
Her most recent tournament was in Nottingham where Xu beat Katie Volynets but then lost to Magda Linette.
Peyton Stearns is 34th in the live rankings and this is her first grass court tournament of the year. The 23-year-old hasn't got a great deal of experience on this surface with just six matches and only two victories. Stearns is yet to win at Wimbledon, losing in round one in 2023 and 2024.
Xu will put up a good show but we believe Stearns can get the win.

Both of these players will want a good run in Eastbourne this week. Stearns is the much more experienced and higher ranked player but hasn't had a great deal of succcess when playing on grass courts. Her form on other surfaces has been good this year, including a recent Italian Open semi-final.
Mingge Xu is a promising 17-year-old from Wales. Some good results have been earned in her short career. Stearns can put her greater experience to good use. Our Mingge Xu v Peyton Stearns prediction is Peyton Stearns to win.
